Hamyang is forming boundaries with Sancheong to the south, Geochang to the northeast, Jangsu in North Jeolla Province to the northwest, Hadong to the south, and Namwon in North Jeolla Province. Hamyang stretches 25km from east to west, and 50km north to south making the area of 725.06 km2, being high in the west and low in the east. Though mountains cover 79% of the land and the farming area is only 14%, the agriculture is still the main business. As of December, 2007, it has a population of 17,697 with 40,637 households, and is divided into 1 town and 10 subcounties. |

Located on the northwest of Gyeongnam, Hamyang has the mountain ridges of Sobaeksanmaek on the border with the Honam Area; Mt. Deokyusan on the north, Mt. Jirisan on the south, and Mt. Baekunsan in the center. The streams Namgyecheon, Wicheon and Eomcheon rise from Mt. Deokyusan, Mt. Baekunsan and Mt. Jirisan respectively. They meet on the southeast of Hamyang and flow to Namgang River.
As Hamyang lies on the plains of Sobaek Mountain Ranges, it has a high temperature and humidity oceanic climate in the summer. The annual average temperature is 12.2¡É and the temperature range is highly variable the hottest being 24.5¡É in July, and the coldest averaging around 1.4¡É below zero in January. Annual average precipitation in 2005 amounts to 1,244.9mm. The most precipitation is shown in the summer, when the northern Pacific Ocean appears, while the lowest precipitation appears in winter.
The transportation became very convenient with the opening of 88 Olympic Expressway, Daejeon-Tongyeong Expressway, Gunsan-Hamyang Expressway and Ulsan-Hamyang Expressway.
In December, 2007, Hamyang had 2,925 registered companies, which were employing 10,270 workers. Most of companies are operating at the Anpyeong and Uiwi agriculture and industry complexes.
Hamyang is a popular tourist attraction as a climbing course and tourist resort with high mountains like Jirisan (National Park No.1), Deokyusan (National Park No.10), Hwangmaesan, Gibaeksan, Baekunsan, Gwaegwansan, Obongsan, Sambongsan and the valleys in Sinjindong, Hwarimdong, Baegmudong, Bujeondong and Chilseon Valley and Hansin Valley. |
