Located at the northwest end of Gyeongnam Province, Geochang County is surrounded by 10 high mountains over 1,000m including Mt. Deokyusan (1,594m). As Hwanggang River rises from these mountains and flows through the county, its center makes a big inland basin of low land (200m) with the typical continental climate. Therefore, Geochang is called 'the town of beautiful mountains and clean water'.
As of December, 2007, it has the population of 63,979 with 25,909 households and is divided into 1 town and 11 subcounties. It is the center of culture, economics, and transportation of northwestern Gyeongnam as well as the center of education with 1 junior college, 1 technical college and 7 high schools.
Geochang is situated in the center of the 3 National Parks: Gayasan, Jirisan and Deokyusan National Parks. 88 Olympic Expressway passes Geochang.
Apples, watermelons and strawberries have national fame for their quality. Geochang, as the 250m high basin on the inland mountains, has a good geological environment to grow apples: big temperature gap and enough sunshine. Therefore, the local specialty, Geochang Apples, take pride in the feature of the 'high sugar content', 'strong fragrance', 'superior density' and 'storage convenience'.
As for the tourist attractions, it has Gyeongyejeong, Wolseong Valley and Gajo Hot Spring as well as Suseungdae County Tourist Site, where the International Theater Festival is held annually. |
